REGISTRATION FORM FOR FOOD MANAGER CERTIFICATION COURSE

Mid-Bergen Regional Health Commission is offering a Food Manager’s course and certification exam on Monday, June 4, 2012 and June 11, 2012 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. You Must attend both sessions. (DOORS CLOSE AT 4:00 PM, THERE WILL BE NO ADMITTANCE AFTER START TIME.) This two day course will culminate with a Food Safety Manager’s certification exam prepared and graded by The National Registry of Food Safety Professionals. (This is a nationally recognized certification.) The Cost of the course is $165 per person; this includes the certification exam, textbook and handouts.

Rabies is a viral disease of mammals which is transmitted through the bite of an infected animal.

Most reported rabies cases occur in wild animals such as raccoons and bats however cats and other household pets may become infected.

Be sure to keep all pets rabies vaccinations up to date.
Never feed or approach any wild or unfamiliar animal.
If you are bitten or scratched by any wild or unfamiliar animal, thoroughly clean the wound with soap and water. Seek medical treatment as soon as possible.

Norovirus is a highly contagious illness which affects one in fifteen Americans or approximately 20 million people per year. Norovirus is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in the United States. It is also responsible for more food borne outbreaks than any other causative agent. Norovirus symptoms include; stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, low-grade fever, chills, body aches and fatigue. Most people recover within 1 to 2 days after the onset of illness; however people who are immuno-compromised may have more serious complications. Norovirus can be found in the vomit and stool of people who have the illness. It can be contracted by eating foods contaminated with the virus, touching surfaces contaminated with the virus, and having direct contact with someone who is has the illness. If you or someone you know contracts the illness be sure that they stay well hydrated, dehydration is common with Norovirus infection.

Tips to help avoid contracting Norovirus:

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not effective against viruses.

Carefully wash all fruits and vegetables. Be sure to wash the outside surface of all produce BEFORE cutting into it.

Cook oysters and other shellfish thoroughly before eating.

Clean and disinfect surfaces which could be infected (always after an episode of diarrhea or vomiting)

Do not prepare food for others will ill.

Report any outbreaks of Norovirus to your local health department.

Wash your hands thoroughly after touching amphibians (frogs and toads) or reptiles (turtles, snakes, and lizards). Contact with these animals can be a source of Salmonella infections although the animal appears to be clean and healthy. The germ can be shed in their droppings and can easily contaminate their bodies and living areas. Salmonella can cause diarrheal illness that can be anywhere from mild to life threatening.

Radon is a colorless odorless radioactive gas which is naturally occurring. The gas seeps from soil into homes through cracks and other openings in the foundation of any building. Radon exposure can cause damage to lung tissue. The more radon you are exposed to and the length of that exposure can increase your risk of developing lung cancer. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths annually in the United States.

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recommends that all homes be tested for radon.

There are two types of radon tests that can be done. A short term test is done over a 2-7 day period, and can indicate the level of radon in a home. A long term test is done over a 3-12 month period and will provide the best estimate of average exposure over time. It is important that any long term tests include the winter months as radon concentrations are often higher at this time of year.

Short term tests are often available at hardware stores. Be sure to follow all instructions included with the kit carefully. Do not place test kits in direct sunlight, high heat or high humidity areas of your home. Test should be placed on the lowest livable area of your home (this is usually the basement). Do not place tests in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms or closets. Do not keep any windows or doors open for the duration of the test. Avoid using fans, fireplaces or wood burning stoves for the duration of the test.

Long term tests should be done by a DEP certified radon tester. A list of certified radon test and remediation companies is available at www.njradon.org. If remediation is necessary be sure that a post mitigation test is done to prove that the system is working.

Here is a list of health safety tips during the holidays.

Alcohol- Can be dangerous if ingested by children or pets. Be sure all alcoholic beverages are out of the reach of children and pets.

Medicines- Be sure that all medications are stored safely and are not accessible to children

Toys- Be cautious when purchasing antique or foreign-made toys. They may contain high levels of lead. For toy safety please contact the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission at 1-800-638-2772

Candles- Never leave a lit candle unattended. Be sure candles are kept out of the reach of children or pets.

Button Batteries and Magnets- Pose a chocking risk if swallowed. Batteries can cause stomach burns if ingested. Magnets may attract one another internally and can cause serious damage to the digestive system.

Holiday Plants- Be aware that some plants are poisonous to people and/or pets. Holly, Jerusalem Cherry, Mistletoe, Boxwood and a variety of species of Yew can cause serious gastrointestinal problems. Call the NJ Poison Experts at 1-800-222-1222 to inquire about other plants which may be toxic.

Fire Salts- Can cause serious stomach problems if ingested. Be sure to keep them out of the reach of children.

Lamp Oils- If ingested lamp oil can get into the lungs and cause pneumonia or even death. Always keep lamp oil and oil lamps out of the reach of children and pets.

Wrapping Paper- Do not burn wrapping paper in a fireplace. Papers can contain toxic metals which can damage the fireplace or potentially cause a fire.

Cigars and Cigarettes- Keep ash trays and “butts” out of the reach of children and pets. If swallowed tobacco products can be poisonous.

Fireplaces- Have chimneys and flues inspected by a professional prior to using for the season. Carbon Monoxide is a colorless odorless gas that can cause serious health problems or death.
