January is National Radon Action Month

Radon is a colorless odorless radioactive gas which is naturally occurring. The gas seeps from soil into homes through cracks and other openings in the foundation of any building. Radon exposure can cause damage to lung tissue. The more radon you are exposed to and the length of that exposure can increase your risk of developing lung cancer. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths annually in the United States.

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recommends that all homes be tested for radon.

There are two types of radon tests that can be done. A short term test is done over a 2-7 day period, and can indicate the level of radon in a home. A long term test is done over a 3-12 month period and will provide the best estimate of average exposure over time. It is important that any long term tests include the winter months as radon concentrations are often higher at this time of year.

Short term tests are often available at hardware stores. Be sure to follow all instructions included with the kit carefully. Do not place test kits in direct sunlight, high heat or high humidity areas of your home. Test should be placed on the lowest livable area of your home (this is usually the basement). Do not place tests in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms or closets. Do not keep any windows or doors open for the duration of the test. Avoid using fans, fireplaces or wood burning stoves for the duration of the test.

Long term tests should be done by a DEP certified radon tester. A list of certified radon test and remediation companies is available at www.njradon.org. If remediation is necessary be sure that a post mitigation test is done to prove that the system is working.

For more information please visit www.njradon.org or contact the DEP Bureau of Environmental Radiation Radon Section at (800) 648-0394.

Holiday Safety Tips

Here is a list of health safety tips during the holidays.

Alcohol- Can be dangerous if ingested by children or pets. Be sure all alcoholic beverages are out of the reach of children and pets.

Medicines- Be sure that all medications are stored safely and are not accessible to children

Toys- Be cautious when purchasing antique or foreign-made toys. They may contain high levels of lead. For toy safety please contact the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission at 1-800-638-2772

Candles- Never leave a lit candle unattended. Be sure candles are kept out of the reach of children or pets.

Button Batteries and Magnets- Pose a chocking risk if swallowed. Batteries can cause stomach burns if ingested. Magnets may attract one another internally and can cause serious damage to the digestive system.

Holiday Plants- Be aware that some plants are poisonous to people and/or pets. Holly, Jerusalem Cherry, Mistletoe, Boxwood and a variety of species of Yew can cause serious gastrointestinal problems. Call the NJ Poison Experts at 1-800-222-1222 to inquire about other plants which may be toxic.

Fire Salts- Can cause serious stomach problems if ingested. Be sure to keep them out of the reach of children.

Lamp Oils- If ingested lamp oil can get into the lungs and cause pneumonia or even death. Always keep lamp oil and oil lamps out of the reach of children and pets.

Wrapping Paper- Do not burn wrapping paper in a fireplace. Papers can contain toxic metals which can damage the fireplace or potentially cause a fire.

Cigars and Cigarettes- Keep ash trays and “butts” out of the reach of children and pets. If swallowed tobacco products can be poisonous.

Food- Be sure all food is handled safely. To obtain food safety tips please go to http://www.njpies.org/News-and-Events/Press-Releases.aspx.

Fireplaces- Have chimneys and flues inspected by a professional prior to using for the season. Carbon Monoxide is a colorless odorless gas that can cause serious health problems or death.

Health & Safety Tips For The Winter Season

-	Be sure to check weather forecasts regularly, weather patterns may change frequently and you’ll want to be prepared.
-	If you are planning to use a fireplace for winter heat, be sure to have the chimney cleaned and inspected before the season begins.
-	Change batteries in all of your smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, flashlights and battery powered radios. (test all items at least once per month to be sure they remain in working order)
-	Weather-proof your home. Add or replace weather stripping, insulation and storm windows in order to keep the cold air outside. Stuff towels underneath doors and under drafty windows.
-	Be sure you have adequate snow and ice removal equipment at home and in your vehicle.
-	Have your vehicle winterized before the beginning of the season. Replace worm tires and brakes, check for adequate tire pressure. Have an oil change and tune up if necessary. Check that wiper blades and headlights are in good working order. Check and refill any fluids that are low.
-	Keep your car stocked with supplies in case of an emergency. Have a basic tool kit, jumper cables, emergency flares, a flash light and a battery powered radio (with batteries), a small shovel, windshield scrapper, and road salt or kitty litter for tire traction.
-	If you get stuck in your vehicle for any reason you will want to have on hand: a small supply of snack foods, water, blankets, tissues, a first aid kit, a cell phone and portable charger, a change of clothes and a toothbrush and tooth paste.
-	Always have at least one week’s worth of food and water in your home at all times. You should have a stock of canned and no cook foods (be sure you have a non-electric can opener)
-	Be sure to have a fully stocked first aid kit, at least a weeks supply of any necessary medications, flashlights, battery powered radio, extra batteries and a fire extinguisher.
-	Use common sense when getting dressed to go outside. Wear layers of clothing, water proof gloves and boots, slip resistant shoes and/or ice and snow traction devices made to fit on the bottom of each shoe to give you better traction, a pair of sunglasses (UVA/UVB), and a warm jacket.
-	Avoid overexerting yourself when outdoors. Work slowly with periods of (preferably) indoor rest. Speak with your doctor if you have respiratory problems, heart disease or high blood pressure. Follow his/her advice on physical activities.

Stay Healthy During Flu Season

Flu season is rapidly approaching, but there are ways to reduce your chances of catching the bug.

- Get Vaccinated- It is especially important for people who fall into high risk groups. This includes young children, pregnant women, people over the age of 65, and anyone with a chronic health issue (such as asthma or diabetes). All children six months or older can receive a flu shot. Ask your doctor if the flu shot is right for you.

- Don’t Touch- As much as possible try to avoid touching your face during the day. Touching your eyes, nose or mouth can increase the chances of catching the flu virus. Do not bite your nails. Viruses and bacteria can hide underneath fingernails.

- Avoid- Try to limit contact with other individuals who are displaying symptoms. If you are sick stay home.

- Clean- Regularly disinfect commonly touched item in your home or office. This includes phones, light switches, door knobs and handles, keyboards and remotes.

- Cover up- Be sure to use a tissue every time you sneeze or cough. Throw used tissues in the trash immediately. Wash hands after sneezing or coughing and also after shaking hands with other people. If hand washing facilities are unavailable use hand-sanitizer.

- Quit- If you are a smoker quitting may help to boost your immune system. Smokers get sick more than nonsmokers.

- Take Care- Be sure to get adequate sleep (usually 7-9 hours per night). Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. Stay active, exercising regularly boosts your bodies immune system. Eat healthy foods including fruits and vegetables. Take a multi-vitamin to ensure your body gets all the nutrients it needs to remain healthy.
